Preventing Violence Against Girls—Teens Taking Charge
According to the CDC, 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey of high school students, 10.8% of high school girls surveyed from grades 9-12 were forced to have sexual intercourse at some time in their lives and 19% of students report being physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the past 12 months. In Ulster County last year, 2,326 domestic incident reports—an increase of 26% over the previous year—came into the Domestic Violence Unit established by the County Department of Social Services.Dating violence affects women regardless of their age, but teens are particularly vulnerable. In fact, women age 16 to 24, experience the highest per capita rate of intimate partner violence. Information on Sperling’s Best Places rates the City of Kingston and New Paltz a 5, the Village of Saugerties a 7, and the Village of Ellenville a 6 for violent crimes.National average is a 3. It is a commonly accepted belief that primary prevention should be the gold standard. That being said, the United States of America has not done well in this domain. We have watched childhood obesity rates go up, diabetes rates go up, teen STD rates go up, and teen pregnancy rates go up while the cost of delivering health care explodes.
Through a grant from the Office on Women's Health we are currently offering in Saugerties and Kingston:
A 5 session educational program
“All About Me”
